The MIRS computer package for modeling the rovibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules

2003

International audience; The MIRS spectroscopic software for the modeling of ro-vibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules is presented. It is designed for the global treatment of complex band systems of molecules to take full account of symmetry properties. It includes e cient algorithms based on the irreducible tensor formalism. Predictions and simultaneous data fi tting (positions and intensities) are implemented as well as advanced options related to group theory algebra. Illustrative examples on CH3D, CH4, CH3Cl and PH3 are reported and the present status of data available is given. It is written in C++ for standard PC computer operating under Windows. The full package including on-lin…

Machine learning regression algorithms for biophysical parameter retrieval: Opportunities for Sentinel-2 and -3

2012

Abstract ESA's upcoming satellites Sentinel-2 (S2) and Sentinel-3 (S3) aim to ensure continuity for Landsat 5/7, SPOT-5, SPOT-Vegetation and Envisat MERIS observations by providing superspectral images of high spatial and temporal resolution. S2 and S3 will deliver near real-time operational products with a high accuracy for land monitoring. This unprecedented data availability leads to an urgent need for developing robust and accurate retrieval methods. Machine learning regression algorithms may be powerful candidates for the estimation of biophysical parameters from satellite reflectance measurements because of their ability to perform adaptive, nonlinear data fitting. By using data from …

Dinosaur Metabolism and the Allometry of Maximum Growth Rate

2016

In his 2016 paper, Myhrvold criticized ours from 2014 on maximum growth rates (Gmax, maximum gain in body mass observed within a time unit throughout an individual’s ontogeny) and thermoregulation strategies (ectothermy, endothermy) of 17 dinosaurs. In our paper, we showed that Gmax values of similar-sized extant ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates overlap. This strongly questions a correct assignment of a thermoregulation strategy to a dinosaur only based on its Gmax and (adult) body mass (M). Contrary, Gmax separated similar-sized extant reptiles and birds (Sauropsida) and Gmax values of our studied dinosaurs were similar to those seen in extant similar-sized (if necessary scaled-up) …

Changes in soil mineral N content and abundances of bacterial communities involved in N reactions under laboratory conditions as predictors of soil N…

2016

Proper management of soil fertility requires specific tools for predicting N availability for crops as a consequence of different fertilization strategies. More information is required, especially for organic fertilizers, depending on their mineralization rate, composition, and processing (i.e., fresh or composted manure), as well as their effects on soil properties. Laboratory soil incubations were used as a proxy for understanding plant–soil N dynamics under field conditions. Chemical and microbiological measurements as contents of mineral N, potentially mineralizable N and the abundance of key genes regulating the overall N cycle were used as predictors of mineral N availability to maize…

Unsupervised low-key image segmentation using curve evolution approach

2013

Low-key images widely exist in imaging-based systems such as space telescopes, medical imaging equipment, machine vision systems. Unsupervised low-key image segmentation is an important process for image analysis or digital measurement in these applications. In this paper, a novel active contour model with the probability density function (PDF) of gamma distribution for image segmentation is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution is used to describe both of the heterogeneous foreground and dark background in a low-key image. Besides, an unsupervised curve initialization method is also designed in this paper, which helps to accelerate the convergence speed of curve evolution. The effectiv…

A filtering algorithm for maneuvering target tracking based on smoothing spline fitting

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Abstract and Applied Analysis. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2014/127643 Open Access Maneuvering target tracking is a challenge. Target's sudden speed or direction changing would make the common filtering tracker divergence. To improve the accuracy of maneuvering target tracking, we propose a tracking algorithm based on spline fitting. Curve fitting, based on historical point trace, reflects the mobility information. The innovation of this paper is assuming that there is no dynamic motion model, and prediction is only based on the curve fitting over the measured data. Monte Carlo simulation results show that, …

Gaussian processes retrieval of leaf parameters from a multi-species reflectance, absorbance and fluorescence dataset.

2013

Abstract: Biochemical and structural leaf properties such as chlorophyll content (Chl), nitrogen content (N), leaf water content (LWC), and specific leaf area (SLA) have the benefit to be estimated through nondestructive spectral measurements. Current practices, however, mainly focus on a limited amount of wavelength bands while more information could be extracted from other wavelengths in the full range (400-2500 nm) spectrum. In this research, leaf characteristics were estimated from a field-based multi-species dataset, covering a wide range in leaf structures and Chl concentrations. The dataset contains leaves with extremely high Chl concentrations (>100 mu g cm(-2)), which are seldom es…

Gaussian processes uncertainty estimates in experimental Sentinel-2 LAI and leaf chlorophyll content retrieval

2013

Abstract ESA’s upcoming Sentinel-2 (S2) Multispectral Instrument (MSI) foresees to provide continuity to land monitoring services by relying on optical payload with visible, near infrared and shortwave infrared sensors with high spectral, spatial and temporal resolution. This unprecedented data availability leads to an urgent need for developing robust and accurate retrieval methods, which ideally should provide uncertainty intervals for the predictions. Statistical learning regression algorithms are powerful candidats for the estimation of biophysical parameters from satellite reflectance measurements because of their ability to perform adaptive, nonlinear data fitting. Regression diagnostics applied in kinetic data processing: Outlier recognition and robust weighting procedures

2010

An efficient protocol, based on advanced statistical diagnostics and robust fitting techniques applied to the least-squares processing of kinetic data of chemical reactions, is presented and discussed. The procedure, which is aimed at obtaining highly accurate estimation of the fitting parameters, consists of the identification of the outliers that remarkably impair the fitting by means of the so-called “leverage analysis” and some related diagnostics. This approach allows the elimination of the actually aberrant observations from the data set and/or their robust weighting to inhibit the negative effects induced on the data fitting, with consequent reduction of the bias introduced into the …

Gain Scheduling H 2 / H ∞ Structural Control of a Floating Wind Turbine

2014

Abstract For wind turbine load mitigation, this paper proposes an active structural control deign of a hybrid mass damper installed at the tower top of a spar-type floating wind turbine. System dynamic model is established based on first principles and the polynomial curve fitting approach, while different steady-state points are derived. Then, a gain scheduling H 2 / H ∞ state feedback controller is designed by solving linear matrix inequalities, which aims to reduce the loading. At last, nonlinear simulations are performed under different wind and wave conditions, and the results demonstrate that more load reduction could be achieved at the expense of more energy consumption in mass dampe…
